Tiffen’s new 39mm UV, CP and Black Pro-Mist filters are perfect match for two of Fujifilm’s prime lenses

Filter manufacturer Tiffen has announced it is adding a new 39mm filter option to three of its most popular filter lineups. This new size brings new options to smaller optics that would otherwise need step-up rings to work with Tiffen’s expansive lineup of filters.

As more lenses get released for compact APS-C camera systems, we’re starting to see more optics using 39mm front filter threads. Fujifilm, in particular, has released two lenses with 39mm front filter threads as of late: the 27mm F2.8 R WR and the 60mm F2.4 R Macro. There are also plenty of older lenses from Leica and others that use 39mm front filter threads.

Fujifilm’s XF 27mm F2.8 R WR uses a 39mm front filter thread.

Until now, these lenses would only work with Tiffen filters if you chose a larger-diameter filter and used an appropriately sized step-up ring to cover the entire front element of the lens. While likely not a deal-breaker, it’s nice to now have a native front filter option for these lenses.

At launch, Tiffen’s UV protection, Black Pro-Mist and circular polarizing filter lineups will each get a 39mm option. Specifically, the 39mm UV protection filters costs $11, the 39mm circular polarizing filters costs $20 and the Black Pro-Mist filters costs $65 in each of the usual strengths (1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1 and 2).

Tiffen hasn’t specified whether or not its other filters will receive 39mm versions in the future, but it’s probably safe to assume they will should these initial three models prove popular enough. Each filter is made in the United States and comes with a 10-year warranty.
