Samsung Electronics is standing firm on its conservative battery strategy even as Chinese rivals push premium smartphones with larger batteries and charging speeds exceeding 100 watts, arguing that long-term safety and real-world performance matter more than winning the specifications race.
The South Korean company used the launch of its latest Galaxy Z Fold8 series to introduce silicon-carbon battery technology for the first time in its smartphones. Yet, despite adopting the newer chemistry, Samsung has limited the Fold8 Ultra to a 5,000mAh battery with 45W wired charging, figures that trail several competing foldables.
Asked why Samsung continues to lag rivals on battery capacity and charging speeds, company executives made it clear that engineering priorities have not changed.
“When it comes to the battery, we at Samsung have a very strong philosophy of holding ourselves to the strictest standards in terms of safety,” Sunghoon Moon, EVP, Mobile R&D, Samsung, said to The Mobile Indian during a media roundtable, adding that safety and stability remain the company’s two highest priorities.
The comments underline Samsung’s broader strategy as competition in foldables intensifies. While rivals increasingly advertise larger batteries and faster charging, Samsung is attempting to differentiate itself through hardware engineering, durability and software optimisation rather than headline specifications.
The company said introducing silicon-carbon batteries into the Galaxy lineup required extensive research and validation before they were considered ready for commercial use. Samsung argued that battery chemistry alone is not enough and must be supported by a complete system architecture covering charging, thermal management and long-term reliability.
Moon also defended the decision to retain 45W charging, saying users judge charging by how quickly a phone becomes usable in everyday situations rather than by peak wattage figures.
“What really matters about charging speed is how effective and efficient it feels in real-life scenarios,” he said, adding that Samsung focuses on optimising the overall charging experience instead of “chasing numbers on paper.”
Well, that philosophy extends beyond batteries. Throughout the hardware briefing, Samsung repeatedly stressed that foldable innovation comes from optimising the entire system rather than individual components. Engineers redesigned the display structure, hinge, thermal system and internal architecture together to make the latest Fold8 series thinner while improving durability and battery integration.
A key part of that redesign is a new titanium-based display support structure, which Samsung says improves rigidity while allowing the foldable display to become thinner and reducing crease visibility. The slimmer display assembly also creates additional internal space for cooling and battery components.
Samsung’s approach also extends to durability claims. Unlike some competitors that advertise fold-cycle numbers, Moon said Samsung avoids focusing on figures that vary depending on testing conditions. Instead, he said Fold devices undergo more than 100 validation tests covering repeated folding, drops, pressure, moisture exposure and other real-world usage scenarios before reaching consumers.
The company similarly defended retaining an IP48 rating on the latest foldables, saying customer experience is more important than achieving higher certification numbers.
Samsung also revealed that seven generations of customer feedback influenced its decision to expand the foldable portfolio to three mainstream models, arguing that different users increasingly expect different form factors for productivity, entertainment and lifestyle use cases.
As foldable smartphones move into a more competitive phase, Samsung appears willing to concede leadership in specification sheets if it can convince buyers that engineering discipline, reliability and safety remain stronger selling points than the fastest charging speeds or the biggest batteries.
