Samsung’s Flip series has always appealed to those select users looking for something different from the sea of conventional foldable smartphones. While the folding design initially grabbed attention, recent generations have focused on making the form factor more practical. With the Galaxy Z Flip8, Samsung appears to be taking that approach further by improving the cover screen experience, refining the design and adding AI features that are designed to be used without even opening the phone.
After spending some time with the device, the Galaxy Z Flip8 feels less like a novelty and more like a compact flagship that happens to fold.
Slimmer, Lighter and Easier to Carry
The first thing you notice is how comfortable the phone feels in hand. Weighing just 180g and measuring only 6.1mm when unfolded, the Galaxy Z Flip8 is Samsung’s slimmest Flip yet. Folded shut, it slips easily into a pocket or small bag without feeling bulky.
Samsung has retained the familiar Clamshell design but refined it further. The hinge feels solid, while opening and closing the device is smooth. Despite the slimmer profile, the phone still feels well built and carries an IP48 rating for water resistance.
A Cover Screen That Does More
The biggest change this year is the larger 4.1-inch Super AMOLED FlexWindow. Instead of acting as a simple notification display, it now functions as an extension of the main interface.
Users can access most of the apps, notifications and AI-powered features directly from the cover display. It reduces the need to unfold the phone for routine tasks. Also, Now Brief feature provides updates and suggestions, while Gemini integration allows users to initiate actions using the side key or voice commands. During our brief hands-on experience, the larger display felt significantly more useful than in previous Flip generations, making quick interactions genuinely convenient.
Display Engineering Gets an Upgrade
Open the phone and you’re greeted by a 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. The screen remains one of the strongest aspects of the Flip series, offering vibrant colours, sharp visuals and fluid scrolling.
Samsung says its latest display engineering has helped make the Flip8 thinner without compromising durability. The company has introduced its new Flex Titanium structure, which combines a titanium-alloy film with an enhanced titanium plate to strengthen the display support, absorb impact and reduce crease visibility over time. The revised hinge mechanism also contributes to a smoother unfolding experience.
Outdoor visibility also sees an improvement. With brightness reaching up to 3,000 nits, Vision Booster and a low-reflection display coating, the screen remained easy to view under bright lighting during our hands-on session.
Cameras Focus on Content Creation
Samsung continues to position the Flip as a content creation device. The Galaxy Z Flip8 features a 50MP primary camera paired with a 12MP ultra-wide sensor, while selfies are handled by a 10MP front camera.
The standout feature remains FlexCam, though not new. Flex Mode allows users to position the phone at different angles for hands-free photography and video recording without requiring a tripod. Samsung has also introduced Camcorder Grip with a Zoom Rocker, making handheld video recording feel more natural.
Additional features such as Super Steady with Horizontal Lock, FlipShot and Mirror View further build on the Flip’s strength as a device for social media creators and users who enjoy taking selfies and short-form videos.
Performance and Battery
Powering the Galaxy Z Flip8 is Samsung’s new Exynos 2600 processor, paired with 12GB RAM and up to 512GB of storage. Although detailed Benchmarking will have to wait until the full review, everyday navigation, multitasking and App switching felt responsive during our initial experience.
Samsung has also increased battery capacity to 4,300mAh, which should address one of the long-standing concerns around Flip devices. The phone supports 25W wired charging, capable of charging up to 55% in around 30 minutes, along with 15W wireless charging and Wireless PowerShare.
First Verdict
Rather than reinventing the Flip formula, Samsung has focused on making the design more useful in daily life. The larger FlexWindow, slimmer profile, improved durability, brighter display and practical camera features all contribute to a device that feels more mature than its predecessor.
These are only first impressions, and longer testing will reveal how the Exynos 2600 performs, how the battery holds up under daily use and whether the AI features genuinely improve the experience. However, based on our initial hands-on, the Galaxy Z Flip8 looks like Samsung’s most refined clamshell foldable yet-one that builds on its strengths while making the foldable experience feel more natural than ever.
