OpenAI Launches Ads in ChatGPT in India

Earlier this year, OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT and these are now going live in India. With ads in ChatGPT in India, OpenAI is bringing its advertising program to one of the chatbot’s largest and most active markets. The ads will initially be available to logged-in adults using the Free and Go tiers, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education users will continue to have an ad-free experience.

WPP and Omnicom will be OpenAI’s first agency partners for ChatGPT Ads in India. The companies will work with brands on strategy, creative development, measurement, brand safety and campaign execution. More than 50 brands are expected to begin running advertisements on ChatGPT in India this week.

OpenAI says the agency model is non-exclusive and that it will continue working with other agencies as the advertising program expands.

The company will also open self-serve access to ChatGPT Ads Manager in India on September 4. Businesses of all sizes will be able to sign up, with daily advertising budgets starting at Rs 725.

Ads may appear below a ChatGPT response when there is a relevant sponsored product or service. OpenAI says these advertisements will always be clearly marked as sponsored and visually separated from the chatbot’s response. The company is emphasising that advertising will not affect how ChatGPT generates answers. Responses will continue to be based on what is most helpful to the user, regardless of whether an advertisement appears alongside them.

OpenAI also says advertisers will not have access to users’ conversations, chat history, memories or personal information. The company says it does not sell user data to advertisers. Instead, advertisers will receive aggregated campaign metrics such as impressions and clicks rather than information about individual users or their conversations.

Users will also have control over the ads they see. They can dismiss advertisements, provide feedback, find out why an ad was shown, manage ad personalisation and clear data used for advertising.

Ads in ChatGPT in India will not be shown on accounts belonging to people who identify themselves as under 18 or are predicted to be under 18. They will also not be eligible to appear alongside sensitive or regulated topics, including mental health and politics. OpenAI says its advertising policies will also continue to target scams, misleading claims and other harmful content.

OpenAI further adds the advertising program is intended to help support broader access to ChatGPT through its free and lower-cost plans. At the same time, the company says it will prioritise user trust and the quality of the ChatGPT experience rather than maximising engagement or short-term advertising revenue.

For businesses, ChatGPT Ads are designed to provide another way to reach users when they are actively researching products, comparing options or making purchasing decisions. OpenAI says the platform could provide opportunities for established companies, small businesses and emerging Indian brands to reach potential customers at these moments.

The company plans to refine the advertising experience based on feedback from users and advertisers, with additional advertising formats, campaign objectives and buying options expected to be introduced over time.
