Xiaomi Announces HyperOS 4 with a Glass Design, New AI Features, and More

Xiaomi has announced the launch of HyperOS 4, the latest version of its operating system based on Android 17. The release brings a revamped look for the user interface with glass elements, clearly inspired by Apple’s Liquid Glass, along with new AI features, performance improvements, and more. The company also announced the list of devices will get HyperOS 4 beta.

Xiaomi is bringing a major visual overhaul with HyperOS 4, introducing a new “Soft Light Glass” design language with translucent elements and lighting effects across the interface. The glass-inspired look will appear in areas such as Quick Settings, menus, widgets and folders, with Xiaomi also working on realistic refraction effects to make the interface feel more dynamic.

The lock screen is getting more flexibility as well, where users will be able to resize the clock and adjust its placement, while stacked notifications will make it easier to manage multiple alerts. Xiaomi is also adding more options for resizing folders and grouping widgets. Apps will be able to switch between portrait and landscape layouts more smoothly, including floating apps that can rotate to match the display orientation.

Then, coming to performance and efficiency in HyperOS 4, the company says its redesigned app runtime environment helps system apps run more efficiently and also allows the OS to operate with less memory than HyperOS 3. In internal testing, opening 30 apps one after another after extended use was 17.5% faster, while frame drops during longer sessions dropped by 28.9%.

The company is also using AI to predict which resources an app may need next and preload them into RAM. Xiaomi claims that after nine hours of phone usage, app loading can be around 18% faster compared with HyperOS 3. Next, battery life has also been improved across different tasks, while scrolling through large collections of photo thumbnails in the Gallery app is claimed to be up to 90% faster.

Camera performance gets some attention too. Xiaomi says HDR image processing has been reduced from around 310ms to 240ms, while the camera app’s cold-start time has been cut by around 200ms. Video playback has also been optimised to reduce dropped frames during viewing.

On the AI front, HyperOS 4 uses Xiaomi’s MiMo large language model to power Super AI Assistant 2.0. The assistant can handle tasks such as voice transcription, organising notes, searching through photos, planning trips and controlling compatible smart home and car functions. For more complex requests, the Xiaomi Super Island can show that the command has been received and is being processed before displaying the result.

Xiaomi is also introducing Inspiration Ball, a contextual pointer that lets users interact with content and then ask the AI to perform an action. For example, dragging it over an address could allow users to request navigation, while selecting a product image could prompt the assistant to search for the item online.

The AI upgrades extend to Xiaomi’s first-party apps, so the Recorder app can now generate outlines and summaries, highlight important information and automatically skip silent sections. The Super XiaoAI Input Method adds structured voice-to-text transcription and real-time voice translation, and then AI Voice Notes can use images to extract conclusions and turn information into actionable to-do items.
