Tamron is developing an Android app that will let you update and customize your lenses on-the-go

Tamron has announced it’s working to develop a new Tamron Lens Utility Mobile app that will allow you to update firmware and fine-tune lens settings through the USB-C port on your Android device.

As the name suggests, this new app will effectively be a mobile version of Tamron’s Lens Utility program for macOS and PC computers released last October. Like its desktop counterpart, the app will let you customize various functions of select Tamron lenses to fit your needs, such as controlling the function of customizable buttons and rings.

It will also feature a focus pull feature that will let you set two points of focus that can be racked between at the speed you choose (with .1 second increments), all without the need of a follow-focus rig.

Tamron says the Lens Utility Mobile app ‘is expected to launch later this year,’ but notes the release date is subject to change depending on development conditions. Tamron notes the app should work on Android 6 (Marshmallow) devices and later, although the phone must have a USB-C port to use this app, as it uses a USB-C to USB-C connection to connect with the lens.

As of now, Tamron only lists two of its lenses listed as compatible with the Lens Utility program: its 35–150mm F2–2.8 Di III VXD (Model A058) and its 28–75mm F2.8 Di III VXD G2 (Model A063). It’s probably safe to assume future lenses will be supported as well, be them entirely new designs or updated versions of older models.
