Spotify AI Persona Label Introduced for AI-Generated Artist Identities

A new Spotify AI Persona label has been introduced by the streaming platform. “The badge signals to listeners that an artist’s identity may be AI-generated and does not represent a real person.” The company says this is “another step in our effort to ensure Spotify is the most transparent and trustworthy place to listen to music.”

The move comes as AI-generated music and virtual artist personas become more common on streaming platforms. Spotify says listeners have made it clear that they do not want to assume an artist is a real person, only to discover later that the identity is AI-generated.

The new Spotify AI Persona label will appear on artist profiles, in Search and alongside tracks in playlists. Tapping the badge will also tell listeners whether the artist disclosed themselves as an AI Persona or whether Spotify identified the profile through its own review process.

Artists can disclose that their profile represents an AI Persona through Spotify for Artists starting today. However, Spotify says it will not rely entirely on self-disclosure. The company will also review artist profiles and look for identities that appear to use photorealistic AI-generated people, initially focusing on profiles that meet certain audience thresholds.

Spotify will also take a more conservative approach to recommendations involving these profiles. By default, music from AI Personas will not appear in Spotify’s editorial or algorithmic recommendations. Users can still encounter and listen to this music, including when they choose to follow an AI Persona, but it will not be automatically pushed through personalised recommendations.

The company says the new badge is specifically about an artist’s public identity and should not be confused with how their music was created. Artists can already use Spotify’s AI Credits to disclose how they used AI during the music-making process, while SongDNA provides additional information about the people and contributors behind a track.

Spotify is also expanding its broader efforts to provide more transparency around artists on the platform. Its Verified by Spotify badge indicates that an artist is a real human presenting themselves authentically, while Artist Details provides information such as career milestones, release history and touring activity.

The platform also has Artist Profile Protection, which allows artists to review and approve releases associated with their profiles to reduce the risk of music being incorrectly attributed to them.

Spotify says it will continue adjusting its recommendation systems to prioritise authentic human artists and reduce the presence of spam, low-effort content and other unwanted material in recommendations.
