Skip the RAM upgrade. Your bottleneck is probably somewhere else

Some PC upgrades deliver meaningful performance gains, while others are simply a waste of money. The key is to upgrade where bottlenecks exist rather than replacing components unnecessarily. Here, we’ll show you which upgrades are worth considering and where you should think twice right now.

NVMe SSD

A fast NVMe SSD is a worthwhile upgrade for most PCs. Not only does it offer much shorter access times compared to traditional HDDs, but it also achieves high sequential and random transfer rates. This reduces loading times, speeds up application launches, and makes the system feel more responsive overall.

Foundry

PCIe 4.0 models with 1TB of storage are available for about $100. Prices go up to around $200 for drives offering speeds of up to 7,000 MB/s and featuring a DRAM cache. Tried-and-tested options in the higher price bracket include the Crucial P310 1TB, a solid all-round drive or the Samsung 990 PRO 1TB. When buying, look out for the keywords “Gaming” or “Video editing” in the product description. This way, you can be sure that the drive is designed to handle sustained heavy workloads.

However, PCIe 5.0 models are also worth considering. The fifth generation delivers read speeds of up to 14,500 MB/s and is now priced at barely any more than comparable PCIe 4.0 drives. If you’re buying a new drive anyway, the Lexar ARES PRO is a more future-proof choice. In everyday gaming, the difference compared to the fourth generation is barely noticeable, as current games do not yet make full use of the additional bandwidth. When regularly transferring large files or working with 4K and 8K video footage, you will certainly notice the jump in performance.

RAM

RAM upgrades really come into their own when your computer regularly reaches its capacity limits. To find out whether RAM is actually the bottleneck, take a look at the Task Manager. Open it using Ctrl-Alt-Del, switch to the Performance tab, and monitor the RAM usage under load. If it consistently exceeds 80 percent, an upgrade is advisable. Faster RAM with lower latency can also boost performance in memory-intensive applications.

However, here’s what you absolutely need to know in 2026: the RAM market has changed dramatically since 2025. DDR5-6000 kits with 32 gigabytes, which were still available for under $110 in 2025, now costs between $450 to $500. This is due to the sharp rise in demand from AI data centers, which are consuming a large proportion of global memory chip production.

According to the market research firm TrendForce, significant price reductions are not expected until mid-2027. AMD was more pessimistic at Computex 2026, suggesting that 2028 may be a more realistic timeframe. Anyone currently using an AM4 system with DDR4 who is happy with their setup should think carefully before switching platforms. Switching to DDR5 also means getting a new motherboard and CPU.

Graphics card: The most effective gaming upgrade

For gamers, a high-performance GPU is usually the upgrade with the greatest impact: higher frame rates, more stable frame time curves, better graphics quality, and support for modern rendering techniques such as ray tracing, along with AI-powered upscaling methods like DLSS 4 and FSR 4. By 2026, these features will increasingly become essential tools for achieving playable frame rates in demanding titles.

When buying a graphics card, there’s a rule of thumb you should keep in mind: make sure it has enough VRAM. How much VRAM you actually need depends on the resolution. As a general guide, 8GB of VRAM is increasingly reaching its limits in modern AAA titles. 12GB is a sensible minimum, while 16GB is the more comfortable choice for the next few years.

Before making a new purchase, you should also check whether your CPU is powerful enough to avoid bottlenecking the new GPU.

Processor

More cores, higher IPC (Instructions per cycle; the number of instructions a processor processes per clock cycle), and modern instruction sets offer advantages in computationally intensive applications, rendering workflow, and CPU-intensive games.

The Task Manager shows whether the CPU is actually holding things back and needs upgrading. If CPU utilization under load is consistently close to 100 percent while the GPU still has capacity to spare, this is a clear indication of a CPU bottleneck.

Be sure to budget realistically for the total cost: replacing your CPU often requires a new motherboard and compatible RAM. If you don’t have a clear bottleneck, you’re better off investing the money in a GPU or SSD. In most scenarios, these upgrades deliver a much more immediate performance boost.

Cooling and power supply

Cooling is one of the upgrades that many PC builders underestimate. A quiet air cooler or an all-in-one (AiO) liquid cooling system not only lowers temperatures, but can also help maintain higher boost clocks for longer. This can result in a measurable increase in performance.

Additional case fans optimize airflow, keep the VRMs (voltage regulators) cooler, and can extend component lifespan. An efficient power supply with high voltage stability is important for the latest generation of high-end GPUs. Nvidia’s RTX 50-series cards also use the new 12V 2×6 connector, so your power supply could ideally be ATX 3.1 certified to handle peak power demands reliable.
