Siri AI is Apple’s Answer to Gemini, ChatGPT, Made With Help from Google

Apple has annouced iOS 27 along with other major software updates, and the single main focus for this year’s updates is Siri. Siri is now backed by Apple Intelligence and is called Siri AI which packs the capabilities Google and OpenAI have been offering for a while now with their respective chatbots. Here’s everything Siri AI has to offer.

Siri AI: What’s New?

Siri AI is essentially a major overhaul of Apple’s digital assistant where it is now powered by Apple Intelligence. The new version of Siri is designed to be more conversational, context-aware, and capable of performing actions across apps while understanding personal information, onscreen content, and real-world context.

The revamped assistant can pull information from messages, emails, photos, notes, and other apps to help users find what they need faster. For example, users can ask Siri to find a restaurant recommendation shared by a friend, locate a hotel confirmation from an old email, or surface photos from a recent trip. Siri AI can also perform more complex app actions such as drafting emails, editing photos, sharing content, and creating notes based on conversations.

Next, Siri AI can now search the web for up-to-date information and answer questions on virtually any topic, while maintaining natural follow-up conversations. Apple says users can now interact with Siri more like a chatbot, asking additional questions without restarting the conversation.

Apple has also redesigned how Siri is accessed. On iPhone, users can continue using the “Hey Siri” wake phrase or the side button, but can now also swipe down from the Dynamic Island to launch a deeper conversational interface. On iPad and Mac, Siri AI is integrated directly into Spotlight and context menus, allowing users to ask questions about files, images, and text from anywhere in the system. On Apple Vision Pro, Siri appears as a 3D spatial interface that users can interact with simply by looking at it and speaking.

The company is introducing a dedicated Siri app as well. The new app stores conversation history and syncs it privately across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro through iCloud, allowing users to continue chats across devices.

Visual Intelligence has also received a major upgrade. On iPhone, Siri is now integrated directly into the Camera app through a new Siri mode that lets users point the camera at objects and receive information or perform actions. Examples include splitting a restaurant bill using Apple Cash or getting nutritional information about food. Visual Intelligence is also expanding to iPad, Mac, and Vision Pro, allowing users to analyze screenshots, on-screen content, and even physical objects around them.

Apple says Siri AI has been rebuilt on a new Apple Intelligence architecture that combines on-device AI models with Private Cloud Compute. These new capabilities are powered by the next generation of Apple Foundation Models, custom-built in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models. These latest models run on device and on servers using Private Cloud Compute. The company further notes that personal data remains protected and is not accessible to Apple when cloud processing is required.

The update also improves Siri’s voice capabilities. Users can customize the assistant’s speaking style and pace, while systemwide dictation gains improved accuracy, automatic punctuation, formatting, and capitalization. However, this feature is only available on devices that have support for Apple’s most advanced on-device AI model, and these devices include iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air, iPad models with M4 and later and at least 12GB of unified memory, Mac models with M3 and later and at least 12GB of unified memory, and Apple Vision Pro (M5).

Writing Tools are now deeply integrated into Siri AI as well. Users can generate drafts, rewrite text, adjust tone, and receive writing suggestions anywhere they type. Siri can even adapt generated messages based on how users typically communicate with specific contacts in Mail and Messages. Automatic proofreading is also available across the system and in many third-party apps.

Siri AI: Availability

Apple says Siri AI is available for developer testing starting today and will roll out in beta later this year as part of the next generation of Apple Intelligence features. Apple Intelligence and Siri AI in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27 are available on iPhone 16 models or later, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPad mini (A17 Pro), MacBook Neo (A18 Pro), iPad models with M1 or later, Mac with M1 or later, Apple Vision Pro, Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, and Apple Watch SE 3 when paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone nearby.

Apple also noted that Siri AI will not be available initially in the EU on iOS and iPadOS. Apple is working hard to find a path forward that preserves its users’ privacy and security. When available, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro users in the EU will be able to access Siri AI when set to a supported language.

Siri AI and the other new Apple Intelligence features will also not be available in China while Apple works through regulatory requirements.
