Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Wide May Launch as Galaxy Z Fold 8, Fold 8 Becomes Fold 8 Ultra; Dummy Photos Leaked

Samsung’s naming scheme has always depicted its most premium smartphone as the “Ultra” phone which offers the best the company has to offer. The company didn’t have an Ultra foldable but that could change this year, as it may launch the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.

Samsung, per leaks, is developing two book-style foldables for this year, one of which reportedly has a wider form factor and has been called Z Fold Wide until now. Samsung seems have reworked the naming strategy where the Z Fold Wide will now be called Z Fold 8 (via Ice Universe). This makes it the successor to the Z Fold 7 from last year.

However, in terms of specs and design, Z Fold 7’s true successor will be the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. The Ultra foldable was earlier called the Z Fold 8 in the rumours with the same tall form factor the Z Fold 7 had. In other words, Z Fold Wide is now Z Fold 8 and what was earlier the Z Fold 8 is now the Z Fold 8 Ultra. This rebranding also helps clearly differentiate the two devices, with the Fold 8 Ultra positioned as the more premium model offering a higher-end feature set than the Fold 8.

Next, the same source also leaked the dummy photos of the two devices, giving us a glimpse at how they’ll look in real life. These match the CAD renders for the devices which were leaked earlier in March this year. The Fold 8 is now shorter and has two screens which are wider. It has dual rear cameras. The overall ideal behind this form factor is to compete with Apple’s upcoming foldable which is also rumoured to have a similar wide design.

The Fold 8 Ultra on the other hand, seems to retain the design of the Z Fold 7 in terms of form factor, camera module placement, etc.

Another leak by Ice Universe states that “crease control on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 series is just as impressive as that of the OPPO Find N6.” For those uninitiated, the OPPO Find N6 claims to have a foldable display with zero-feel crease which has been achieved through the brand’s 2nd-Generation Titanium Flexion Hinge, crafted with industry-first 3D Liquid Printing technology.
