Report: Nothing AI Devices To Be Prioritised Over Smartphones

Nothing started as a smartphone company and forayed into the audio and wearables segment through its sub-brand CMF. However, it seems like the company is reworking its launch strategy for the months to come, where Nothing AI devices like its smartwatch, speakers, and more, will be prioritised over new smartphones.

According to a report by Smartprix, citing an industry insider, the London-based consumer technology brand is planning to reposition itself as an AI-first company, with a new lineup of AI-powered audio and wearable devices expected to lead the transition. The report suggests that the shift will happen in phases rather than all at once, with the first stage of the company’s AI-focused roadmap likely to begin in September.

Nothing has primarily been known for its smartphones, but the report claims AI is now taking on a much larger role within the company. As the smartphone market becomes increasingly competitive and profit margins continue to narrow, Nothing is reportedly shifting more resources towards AI-powered devices.

According to the report, the strategy has strong backing from co-founder Carl Pei, who sees AI hardware as the company’s next major growth opportunity. The publication adds that these AI initiatives are now receiving greater internal priority than Nothing’s traditional smartphone roadmap.

We have already seen Nothing and CMF cancel two of their key smartphones for this year, including the Nothing Phone (4) and the CMF Phone 3 Pro.

As part of the first phase of its strategy, Nothing is reportedly preparing to launch several AI-enabled products under both its Nothing and CMF brands. According to the report, the upcoming lineup of CMF and Nothing AI devices could include:

  • CMF Ear Clip Buds
  • Nothing Headphones (Gen 2)
  • Nothing Smartwatch
  • CMF Speakers

If accurate, the CMF speakers would mark the company’s entry into the smart speaker segment. CMF is already teasing the launch of the Ear Clip buds, while reports of a Nothing smartwatch being in development also surfaced late last month.

The report adds that despite expanding into new product categories, Nothing is expected to retain its signature transparent-inspired design language and distinctive industrial design across the upcoming devices.

Smartprix claims Nothing is targeting the August-September timeframe for the first wave of announcements, placing the launches just ahead of Apple’s annual iPhone launch event, which is typically held in September.

As with all leaks, these details should be taken with a degree of caution, as the company’s plans could change before the official announcement. If the report proves accurate, however, the upcoming launches could mark the beginning of Nothing’s broader push into AI-powered consumer devices.
