Nikon unveils retro-inspired ‘Black Edition’ Z fc and 40mm F2 SE

Nikkon Z 40mm F2 SE lens

Nikon has announced the release of two new special-edition products today: the Nikkor Z 40mm F2 SE lens and a ‘retro-inspired’ version of its Nikon Z fc APS-C mirrorless camera system.

Nikon Z fc Special Edition Black

To pair with Nikon’s two Special Edition (SE) lenses, the company has also announced a Special Edition Black version of its Nikon Z fc APS-C mirrorless camera.

Made as an ‘homage to the original color schemes’ of Nikon’s 35mm film cameras, the all-black Z fc bears a striking resemblance to the company’s FM2 film camera, albeit with an APS-C crop sensor inside. While its silver sibling kept the metallic look, this model coats the entire frame with a black paint and body wrap, with the signature white ‘Nikon’ branding on the front of the viewfinder.

Aside from the outside, however, the Z fc Black Edition remains entirely unchanged from its predecessor. It’s still based around a 20.9MP APS-C sensor, offers Eye-Detect AF, can capture 4K/30p video and features an articulating LCD screen.

The Nikon Z fc Black Edition will be available as a kit with the Nikkor Z DX 16–50mm F3.5–6.3 VR lens in ‘late November’ for $1199.95, exclusively through Nikon’s online store.

Nikkor Z 40mm F2

As was the case with Nikon’s Nikkor 28mm F2.8 SE lens, the Nikkor 40mm F2 SE lens gets a retro look, akin to Nikon’s AI and AI-S lenses introduced in 1977 and 1982, respectively. This includes knurled aperture and focus rings, as well as a signature silver divider ring between the two.

Aside from the aesthetic changes, the lens remains optically identical to the non-SE version. It features the same six elements in four groups construction with a nine-blade aperture frame and .29m (1ft) minimum focusing distance. It’s also still weather-sealed and uses the same stepping motor (STM) for AF.

The Nikkor Z 40mm F2 SE is set to ship in ‘early 2023,’ according to Nikon, for a suggested retail price of $309.95.
