A new report alleges that Nikon has discontinued 35 of its F-mount DSLR lenses over the past three years as the company focuses its efforts on mirrorless cameras.
Amatuer Photographer has been tracking availability of Nikon DSLR lenses for the past three years and claims that 35 have been “quietly” discontinued in that time.
While PetaPixel was unable to confirm the three-year timeline, all 35 of the lenses listed by Amateur Photographer are included on Nikon Japan’s official list of “old product,” which is the term the company uses to mark discontinued items or those that are no longer in production. That total list is massive and contains significantly more than 35 lenses, but the company doesn’t include any timing as to when new products are added to this list, meaning many could have been discontinued much longer ago.

For those who are still fans of Nikon’s F-mount DSLRs, getting ahold of these lenses will only become more difficult over time. While not all are currently unavailable and some may still be found with dealers and on store shelves, once the current stock is exhausted, Nikon is unlikely to replenish them.
Nikon is not alone in the move to mirrorless. Earlier this year, it was found that Canon had discontinued all but nine of its EF-mount prime lenses. Many of those optics were already discontinued or were planned to be as early as the first half of 2021. Canon has gone on the record saying that it doesn’t consider these lenses as being discontinued, but rather refers to it as “system optimization.”
