In a blog post on its official website Microsoft is looking back at the performance of its Windows operating system over the past two years and sharing some of its achivements in the period. There are currently over 1.4 billion monthly active Windows 10 and 11 users around the world, and time spent on Windows is up 10% over pre-pandemic levels.
On average, people are spending 40% more time on their Windows 11 PCs, than they did on their Windows 10 ones, but that may not be entirely due to the new OS’ prowess.
Citing Canalys’ numbers, Microsoft says there were more than 340 million PCs shipped in 2021 – a 27% growth over 2019.
Windows 11 has been welcomed by PC user, Microsoft says, as the free upgrade has been accepted at twice the rate of Windows 10 over Windows 8. Microsoft also shares that Windows 11 has the highest quality and satisfaction scores of any Windows ever, apparently. Obviously both of those fail to mention that Windows 11 is only offered to a small subset of Windows 10 users, while Windows 10 was available to just about every Windows 8 user.
Still, the numbers are impressive seeing how the transition wasn’t perfectly smooth. There were documented issues with Windows 11 on AMD processors, along with a number of other bugs and performance problems. But those were quickly addressed and are now a thing of the past – most of them, anyway.
Microsoft says that Windows 11 is responsible for a threefold increase in Microsoft Store traffic, but that could also be a result of new, more favorable Store policies from 2021.
Finally, Microsoft announced that the upgrade offer to Windows 11 is entering its final phase of availability, well ahead of the initial plan of mid-2022.
