Here’s Apple’s ‘Shot on iPhone’ special for the Chinese New Year

Every year Apple makes a special short film to commemorate the Chinese New Year and every year it’s “Shot on iPhone”. This year the film is shot on the iPhone 12 Pro Max, but just like before Apple notes that additional hardware and software was used.

The film itself is a nice heartwarming tale about a girl and the mythical Nian creature, which according to Chinese folklore is a beast that lives in the Sea or Mountains and comes out at the beginning of the Chinese New Year to feed on people and animals.

Here’s the entire 12 minute clip.

And as usual Apple posted another clip for the making of the short film. It shows the process of making of the shots, highlighting the iPhone 12 Pro Max’ potent photographic and videographic abilities, its stabilized 1x and 2.5x cameras and its ultrawide camera. The movie was shot using Dolby Vision, which enabled some clean low-light shots.

One thing that enabled a lot of creativity is the iPhone 12 Pro Max’ ability to achieve shots that are hard or nearly impossible to get with a dedicated camera – a shot from a filled sink, attaching the phone to the wheel of a cart, taping the phone to the ceiling of a house, etc.
