GoPro’s new Hero 11 Black models offer 5.3K 10-bit video at 60fps in extra-tall 8:7 format

GoPro has announced its next-generation action cameras, the Hero 11 Black, Hero 11 Black Creator Edition and Hero 11 Black Mini.

All three of the Hero 11 Black cameras feature a redesigned sensor that’s larger and higher-resolution than those used in previous Hero cameras. In addition to the resolution and size increase, the new sensors also have 10-bit capture, improved video stabilization and the widest field of view ever found in a GoPro camera.

The new Type 1/1.9 (6.40 x 5.60mm) sensor can capture 10-bit video at up to 5.3K resolution at up to 60 frames per second (fps). This footage can be captured in the nearly-square 8:7 aspect ratio, which captures more vertical field of view, allowing for more room to crop when you want to use horizontal crops for more traditional videos and vertical crops for sharing to social platforms such as Instagram Reels, TikTok and other platforms. There’s also a new HyperView mode, which captures the widest 16:9 field of view ever put into a Hero camera (natively).

Other features all three Hero 11 cameras offer include HyperSmooth 5.0 technology with in-camera 360º Horizon Lock for keeping footage smooth and steady, three new Night Effect Time Lapse presets for capturing star trails, light painting and moving vehicles, TimeWarp 3.0 at 5.3K for higher-resolution hyperlapse videos and new Enduro batteries, which extend recording times by up to 38% in the Hero 11 Black model, according to GoPro.

Now onto what’s different between the three models.

The Hero 11 Black is your standard model, with all of the above features in a nearly identical form factor to its Hero 10 predecessor.

The Hero 11 Black Creator Edition uses the same basic camera, but adds additional features for improved audio and video capture. Specifically, GoPro includes a battery grip with built-in buttons for one-handed operation that boosts recording time by up to four hours, as well as an optional directional microphone, external microphone inputs, an HDMI port for using external displays, an LED light for lighting up scenes and two cold shoe mounts for adding additional accessories.

The Hero 11 Black Mini is effectively a lighter, more compact Hero 11 Black that eschews the front-facing screen and extra buttons for a more simplistic design that makes it as easy as possible to use. It captures the exact same footage as the Hero 11 Black, but does so in a smaller form factor with only a recording button and small OLED display on the top for highlighting the current settings, which are selected through GoPro’s Quick app.

All three cameras will also work with GoPro’s subscription service to provide automatic highlights of your capture through the GoPro Quik app, as well as a plug-and-play feature that will simultaneously charge the Hero 11 camera while offloading and uploading footage to your GoPro cloud account.

The GoPro Hero 11 Black and Hero 11 Black Creator Edition are available today for $500 and $700, respectively, unless you’re a GoPro subscriber, which drops the prices down to $400 and $580, respectively. The Hero 11 Black Mini will retail for $400 when it starts shipping on October 25, unless you’re a GoPro subscriber, in which case it will set you back $300.
