Gear in this story

The new Nikon Z DX 24mm f/1.7 is the brand’s first Z-mount non-zoom specifically built for crop-sensor mirrorless models like the Nikon Z50, Z30 and Z fc. Priced at just $280, this petite prime sports a large manual focus ring, dust- and moisture-resistant construction, and focusing as close as 4.7 inches. The housing is constructed primarily of plastic, including the mount. But overall, the lens handles well and feels built to last.

More importantly, the Z DX 24mm proves capable in a wide range of shooting scenarios thanks to its versatile 36mm equivalent focal length and reasonably fast maximum aperture. Performance-wise, subjects shot toward the center of the frame look nice and sharp, even wide open. And anomalies like ghosting, flares, and CA all appear fairly well-controlled. But don’t take our word for it – look at the sample images for yourself.
