Galaxy Watch5 and Watch4 update adds support for doorbell cameras, thermostats

The latest update for the Samsung Galaxy Watch series gives them even more control over gadgets in your smart home. This works with Samsung and third-party devices that integrate with the SmartThings platform.

The update (v1.1.08) is rolling out to the Galaxy Watch5 and Watch5 Pro as well as the Galaxy Watch4 and Watch4 Classic.

With it installed, the watches can control your thermostat by setting the heating or cooling set point temperature. You can also open and close automated blinds or adjust their level manually. Additionally, you can control the fan speed of air purifiers in the house. And if you lost something with a SmartTag attached, you can set the tag to ring (and then stop ringing).

Latest update lets Samsung Galaxy Watches control your SmartThings gadgets

One interesting feature allows the watch to livestream video from home and doorbell cameras. This works with Ring and Nest cameras that support WebRTC. For example, if someone rings your door, you can see who it is on your watch and even talk to them.

The update also allows Galaxy Watches to control Samsung smart TVs, at least ones that support Bluetooth (you also need to be in Bluetooth range for this to work). Accessing the SmartThings controls is easy, just swipe right on the watch face.

By the way, Samsung recently joined forces with other makers using the Matter protocol, which expanded the number of devices that can tie into the SmartThings network. And it announced the new SmartThings Station, a multi-function hub for those just starting to built out their smart home.
