Canon Updates Firmware Across Camera Lines: R5, R6, 1DX III and More

Canon has published firmware updates that upgrade multiple features of the company’s most popular cameras. Updates are available now for the EOS R, Ra, R5, R6, RP, and 1D X Mark III.

The EOS R5 and R6 are seeing the most changes as a result of the new firmware, as the R, RP, and Ra are only being updated to support additional lenses. The 1DX Mark III is receiving four changes that enable new features and improvements to the body.

Canon EOS R5 and R6

The EOS R5 and R6 Firmware Version 1.2.0 upgrades six features of the cameras. First, when using high-speed or low-speed continuous shooting modes, in Drive Mode with High-Speed Display off, the visibility of the subject within the frame has been improved when shooting moving objects. To achieve this, during continuous shooting, black frames will be inserted between frames in the viewfinder and live view. The goal here was to improve the visibility of moving subjects in live view and in the viewfinder.

The Firmware adds an Auto setting to the viewfinder brightness menu that will brighten and dim based on ambient light conditions. It also enables 2nd curtain shooting sync during radio transmission wireless flash shooting when the Speedlite EL-1 flash is attached to the camera.

The update also enables manual flash output (excluding high-speed sync and optical transmission) to be selected and set up to 1/8192 from the camera menu screen when the Speedlite EL-1 flash is attached to the camera.

It improves the compatibility of HEIF images recorded in the camera with MIAF (Multi-Image Application Format) standards.

Finally, the update adds support for AF and release during zoom operations for some RF and EF lenses.

Canon EOS R, RP, and Ra

All three cameras see a minor update that adds improved color balance when using the new RF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens, and adds support for the RF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM and the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM lenses. The support for those lenses existed in a previous iteration of firmware but is also included in this latest version if you did not previously update your camera.

Canon EOS 1D X Mark III

Firmware Version 1.3.0 adds four features and improvements to the flagship Canon DSLR. First, it enables 2nd curtain shooting sync during radio transmission wireless flash shooting when the Speedlite EL-1 flash is attached to the camera.

It also enables manual flash output (excluding high-speed sync and optical transmission wireless flash shooting) to be selected and set up to 1/8192 from the camera menu screen when the Speedlite EL-1 flash is attached to the camera.

The firmware improves the compatibility of HEIF images recorded in the camera with MIAF (Multi-Image Application Format) standards.

Finally, it fixes a phenomenon that may result in the occurrence of time-out under certain conditions during FTP transfer.
