Canon releases 1.3.1 firmware update for EOS R6 after 1.3.0 caused video bug

Earlier this week, Canon released a trio of firmware updates for its EOS R5, EOS R6 and EOS-1D X Mark III camera systems. Within 24 hours, we were informed Canon had removed the firmware version 1.3.0 update for the EOS R6, without any explanation as to why. We now know it was due to an issue that caused problems when shooting Full HD video in high-speed modes using EF-S lenses or cropped video shooting, thanks to a few Twitter users who deduced the problem in a video posted to Chinese social media site BiliBili by user ‘蛋卷肉丝丶.’

A screenshot of the video showing the ‘Err 70’ message being displayed on the back of a Hello Kitty-emblazoned EOS R6.

In the video, we see the individual show off a Hello Kitty-wrapped EOS R6 that displays an ‘Err 70’ message when shooting high-speed video in crop mode. Canon’s documentation shows ‘Err 70’ is ‘An image related malfunction [that’s] been detected.’ According to the video, the issue can be ‘fixed’ by removing the battery, putting it back in and turning the camera back on, but the issue returns when trying to shoot again on those same settings.

To fix this issue, Canon has released firmware version 1.3.1 for the EOS R6, which includes all of the upgrades found in firmware version 1.3.0 and fixes the bug. If you’ve updated your EOS R6 camera to firmware version 1.3.0, be sure to download firmware version 1.3.1 using the link below:
