Canon patent application reveals optical designs for three F2.8 ultra-wide RF mount lenses

A new patent application from Canon has revealed the company is working to develop a trio of ultra-wide lenses for its RF mount mirrorless cameras.

First seen by Canon News, the patent application details the optical designs for a 12mm F2.8 lens, a 14mm F2.8 lens and a 20mm F2.8 lens. Typically, these patent applications show off multiple optical designs that don’t always make it to market, but Canon has both a 14mm F2.8 and 20mm F2.8 lens for its EF mount cameras, so it’d make sense to carry those two options over to its mirrorless mount.

Below are illustrations and technical breakdown of each lens Canon has laid out in Japan patent application 2021–047384.

12mm F2.8

Focus Distance 12.35mm
F Number 2.88
Half Angle (º) 60.28º
Image Height 21.64mm
Total Lens Length 80.22mm

14mm F2.8

Focus Distance 14.42mm
F Number 2.88
Half Angle (º) 56.32º
Image Height 21.64mm
Total Lens Length 91.61mm

20mm F2.8

Focus Distance 19.48mmmm
F Number 2.88
Half Angle (º) 48.02º
Image Height 21.65mm
Total Lens Length 90.74mm

As with all patent applications, or even patents that have been granted for that matter, there’s no guarantee these will ever be developed further. But two of the three designs are similar to past lenses Canon has released, so it’s not out of the realm of possibilities that we could see at least one of these designs in the future.
