In February 2021, Canon unveiled its AI-powered Pan/Tilt/Zoom (PTZ) camera, the PowerShot PICK. At launch, the camera was limited to the Japanese market. Eight months later, Canon launched it across Europe and today, Canon has announced it will be making its way to the United States.
The PowerShot PICK works by using AI to detect subjects within the scene and passively capture photos while people go about their activities. First, it analyzes a scene. Then, it begins identifying individuals within the scene and continues tracking their faces. When it determines an opportunity to capture a clear image, the PowerShot PICK snaps a photo, all without the need for any sort of human interaction.
The camera is built around a rather small 1/2.3”-type 12MP CMOS sensor and 19–57mm equivalent zoom lens, so the image quality isn’t going to compete with the likes of a dedicated DSLR or mirrorless camera. But it is portable enough to pack in a bag and take around to family gatherings or events. It can pan 170-degrees in both directions and tilt 110-degrees.
While it can operate entirely independently, it can also be controlled through voice control. By saying ‘Hello PICK,’ you can tell the camera to take a photo, record a video, change subjects or stop capturing. All photos and videos captured on the device are stored to a Micro SD card, but can also be accessed through a dedicated smartphone app that recommends the best photos taken throughout the capture period.
Canon says the PowerShot PICK will be available in ‘late summer 2022’ for $499. Pre-orders are available at participating retailers starting today.
