Android 14 might see lock screen widgets return, shortcuts are now customizable

Remember when Android had widgets on the lock screen? Well, Android 14 might see the return of such widgets as Mishaal Rahman on X unearthed an intriguing reference in the latest Android 14 beta build.

A new SystemUI flag named “widget_on_keyguard” suggests Google is working on bringing back widgets on the lock screen. However, since this is spotted on the latest Android 14 beta build designated for Pixels, it might be a Pixel-exclusive feature after all.

And even though evidence is scarce, it makes sense for Google to bring back the feature since Apple implemented its widgets to the iOS lock screen last year, likely triggering a response from the search giant.

In addition to the supposed new feature, the latest beta build allows you to change the shortcuts on the lock screen. Yes, the ones located in the screen’s lower left and right corners. The feature is again spotted on Pixel phones, so we still don’t know whether other Android 14 phones will get it.

So now, instead of the default shortcuts, you can choose between a wide range of apps and actions. You can have the Camera app, toggle for Do Not Disturb mode, Flashlight, the Google Home app, Mute toggle, QR code scanner, Wallet or instant video recording.

All you have to do is go to the Wallpapers & style menu in Settings, select Lock screen and find the Shortcuts sub-menu.
