Ripple CTO Highlights How XRP Powers Scalable Settlement in Tokenized Markets
Ripple Chief Technology Officer David Schwartz addressed XRP’s strategic function in global asset settlement in a post on social media platform X on July 30. Responding to questions from investor Andrei Jikh, Schwartz outlined why XRP remains uniquely positioned to support the evolving needs of cross-border financial infrastructure, especially as tokenization and interoperability become priorities across capital markets.
Jikh posed a widely debated question: “If XRP is volatile, why use it over stablecoins for transfers?” Schwartz responded:
There are use cases where volatility isn’t a minus, or is even a plus. Generally, for most digital assets the general view is that the upside is worth more than the downside, so as long as you aren’t very risk averse, holding it is not really a disadvantage.
He explained that XRP’s function as a bridge currency depends on its availability at the moment of transaction—giving it flexibility that fiat-pegged stablecoins may lack in more fragmented or rapidly shifting markets. XRP’s design as a neutral, jurisdiction-agnostic asset, he suggested, supports real-time liquidity across diverse tokenized instruments and currencies.
Schwartz also spoke about the XRP Ledger (XRPL) and its decentralized exchange, which Ripple has not yet employed for enterprise-grade payments due to compliance safeguards. “Even Ripple can’t use the XRPL DEX for payments yet because we can’t be sure a terrorist won’t provide the liquidity for payment,” he stated. However, he pointed to permissioned domain features under development, which are intended to introduce transaction-level controls that could satisfy institutional requirements. Schwartz described XRPL as purpose-built for interoperability and global asset flows, with infrastructure that enables scalable and secure settlement across a growing digital economy.
