Weird Cameras: Fresh from a starring role in the Barbie movie, meet the Video Girl doll

Going into summer 2023, it wasn’t clear if the hallowed tradition of seeking refuge from heat and boredom in a movie theater was ever going to go back to pre-pandemic levels. If anyone could do it, surely it would be Tom Cruise, Christopher Nolan or Wes Anderson, or maybe Michael Keaton’s return to Batman would get people into confined rooms again.

This week, Hollywood’s savior came clad in Pantone 219 C. As of last week box office returns, Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” is now the highest grossing movie of 2023, both in the US and globally ($1 billion+). It’s also now the highest-grossing global film in Warner Bros. history.

Among the stars of the film is the Barbie Video Girl, a doll with a built in video camera released in 2010 that reassures movies goers that she is indeed a real product and no one at Mattel is really sure why.

The video camera/doll has built in 256 MB memory that allows for about 25 min of video capture at 320×240 resolution. A rear LCD screen allowed users to monitor recording and to review or delete files.

It turns our we already kinda knew her. A few months ago DPReview’s Jason Hendardy gave the doll a whirl around Seattle to try to sort out why this doll exists and what the camera’s like to use:

@dpreviewtv Jason Hendardy is back with another Weird Camera, the Barbie Video Girl. To find out just how well this camera does shooting video he takes it around Seattle to give it a test. #dpreview #weirdcamera #videography #seattle #cameratiktok #camera ♬ original sound – DPReview
