VinFast prepares to enter the world’s largest motorcycle market

Vietnamese EV maker VinFast is setting its sights on a major new frontier: India’s massive two-wheeler market. After already laying groundwork for its electric car business in the country, the company is now preparing to launch a lineup of electric scooters as part of a broader push into India’s fast-growing EV sector.

VinFast has confirmed that it plans to bring three of its existing electric scooters – the Evo, Feliz, and Viper – to India, marking its initial entry into the segment. These models are already sold in Vietnam and will be adapted for Indian riding conditions and usage patterns. Early units are expected to arrive as completely knocked down (CKD) kits assembled locally at VinFast’s plant in Tamil Nadu, with longer-term plans pointing toward deeper localization and full-scale manufacturing, according to local media.

The scooters themselves span a range of performance and use cases. The Evo is positioned as a lightweight urban commuter with a modest 2.25 kW hub motor, dual 2.4 kWh battery packs, and a top speed of around 70 km/h (43 mph). Meanwhile, the Feliz and Viper step up in size and capability, riding on larger 14-inch wheels and offering up to 4.8 kWh of battery capacity and a more powerful 3 kW motor on the Viper.

All three models use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry, known for its improved thermal stability and long lifespan – a particularly important consideration in India’s hot climate.

VinFast is also exploring battery swapping as part of its strategy, which could reduce downtime for riders who rely on their scooters daily, such as commuters and delivery drivers. At the same time, the company has filed multiple design patents in India and is working to establish a retail and service network across key cities, signaling that this is more than just a tentative market test.

The move underscores just how important India is in the global two-wheeler landscape. The country is widely considered the largest motorcycle and scooter market in the world, with tens of millions of units sold annually. Two-wheelers aren’t recreational vehicles in India the way they are often seen in the US, but rather are essential daily transportation for a significant portion of the population.

And increasingly, that transportation is going electric. Electric scooters and motorcycles have become one of the fastest-growing segments in India’s mobility market, driven by rising fuel costs, government incentives, and improving technology. For many riders, electric two-wheelers offer a lower-cost alternative to both gasoline-powered bikes and cars, especially in dense urban environments.

That makes India a critical market for the future of electric mobility. VinFast’s entry into the space puts it in direct competition with established local players like Ather, Ola Electric, and TVS, but also positions the company to tap into one of the most important transitions happening in global transportation today.
