Venus Optics announces $499 Laowa 58mm F2.8 2x Ultra-Macro APO for four mirrorless mounts

Venus Optics has announced the released of its latest fully-manual lens, the Laowa 58mm F2.8 2x Ultra-Macro APO. This manual focus macro lens is designed specifically for mirrorless camera systems and offers a maximum 2:1 magnification ratio for larger-than-life macro photos.

The 58mm lens is constructed of 14 elements in 11 groups, including 3 ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements and 3 Ultra-High Refractive Index elements. The apochromat (APO) design it uses is designed to minimize both longitudinal and lateral chromatic aberration with minimal fringing and ghosting to boot. This should prove extra beneficial for macro photography when you’re focus stacking multiple frames atop one another.

Below are a collection of full-resolution sample images, taken with the lens and provided by Venus Optics:

It uses a 13 blade aperture diaphragm, has an aperture range of F2.8 through F22, has a minimum focusing distance of 18.5cm (7.3”) and uses a 67mm front filter thread. Below is a review from Richard Wong, who has a long history reviewing third-party optics:

The lens measures 74mm (2.9”) in diameter by 117mm (4.0”) in length and weighs 595g (1.3lbs). It’s available for Canon R, Leica L, Nikon Z and Sony E mount camera systems and is available starting today for $499.
