Sonic, Angry Birds 5 game crossover event unites Sega and Rovio

Sega and Rovio have announced a crossover event across five mobile games featuring the companies’ most iconic franchises: Sonic the Hedgehog and Angry Birds. Until March 21, 2024, players can explore unique challenges and rewards in Angry Birds 2, Angry Birds Dream Blast, Angry Birds Friends, Sonic Forces and Sonic Dash.

The Sonic and Angry Birds crossover event storyline kicks off when a plot to steal the Angry Brids’ eggs doesn’t go as planned. Sonic and Red must team up to defeat Dr. Eggman, his Badniks and the pigs across both universes. Of course, players will be rewarded with new playable characters, collectibles and limited events for the next week.

“We are lucky to be a part of a company that values brands, being home to some of the most memorable gaming IPs ever. We are excited to unite Sonic and Angry Birds fans in this event and for what the future holds for us as a part of Sega,” said Hanna Valkeapää-Nokkala, VP of Transmedia at Rovio.

This crossover event marks the first brand collaboration since Sega acquired Rovio for $776.2 million in 2023. The event will supercharge the company’s efforts to introduce fans to other games and properties in its now unified portfolio.

“Through this crossover with Rovio, we wanted to create something special for fans of both Sonic the Hedgehog and Angry Birds,” said Mike Evans, SVP of mobile and games as a service publishing at Sega of America. “This event provides players with the memorable experience of seeing iconic characters like Sonic and Red playable in the same universe.”

Additionally, both Sonic and Angry Birds were early movers in the world of game to film adaptations. The first Angry Birds movie hit theaters in May 2016 and Sonic followed suit in 2020. The third Sonic the Hedgehog movie and Paramount+ spin-off series, Knuckles, are due out this year.

“Throughout the years, Sonic the Hedgehog and Angry Birds have exemplified the expansive reach of video games into diverse media landscapes,” said Shuji Utsumi, CEO of Sega of America and co-COO of Sega Corporation. “With our inaugural crossover collaboration with Rovio, we aspire to unite devoted fans from both IPs while welcoming fresh audiences into the fold.”

Details from Sega and Rovio about each game’s crossover events running from March 14-21, 2024 is available below.
