Tokina has announced the atx-m 11-18mm f/2.8 E, its first super-wide-angle zoom lens designed exclusively for mirrorless and promises full compatibility with Sony E-Mount APS-C cameras.

The new lens has a 17-27mm full-frame 35mm equivalent focal range on APS-C cameras (an angle of view of between 104 and 77 degrees) along with a consistent f/2.8 aperture compressed into what Tokina characterizes as a compact and lightweight body. The lens is made to support both photo and video shooters.

The optic is constructed of 13 elements in 11 groups which includes two aspherical elements and two super-low dispersion glass elements that the company says successfully suppress chromatic aberrations. Tokina adds that the “superb” optical design allows for “rich color reproduction” as well as low distortion and low light falloff. The lens features an aperture range of f/2.8 through f/22 via a nine-bladed aperture diaphragm.

Tokina says the atx-m 11-18mm f/2.8 E has “impressive” resolving power from the wide end through the long end and boasts high contrast, low distortion, and also has “quick and precise” autofocus response time in both still and video modes thanks to the lens’ stepping motor (STM). On that note, it promises full compatibility with Sony E-mount APS-C cameras including image stabilization, direct manual focus, manual focus assist mode, eye autofocus, and optical corrections.

The lens has a close focusing distance of 0.19 meters and a macro ratio of 1:9.2, which Tokina says allows it to create wide-angle “macro” images with an interesting perspective effect. It has a front filter size of 67mm and features a micro USB port (Type B) that can be used to upgrade the firmware.

The company says that the atx-m 11-18mm f/2.8 E is ideal for landscapes, group photos, environmental portraits, architecture, astrophotography, automobile photography, street photography, documentary videos, and vlogging. Basically, the company says the lens will work well in just about any situation where a wide angle of view is needed. Below are a few sample photos taken with the new lens (by photographer Toshiya Ogawa), and a larger gallery of sample photos can be found on Tokina’s website.
