Tokina Unveils 17-35mm f/4 for Nikon F and Canon EF

While some might not find this announcement as exciting as a new mirrorless lens, Tokina has unveiled the atx-i 17-35mm f/4 full-frame lens for Canon EF and Nikon F DSLRs.

The company says the lens is designed for full-frame cameras and is made to provide a flexible, wide-angle option. When at a focal length of 17mm, the lens provides a 103.9-degree field of view, which Tokina says is “great for shooting in tight situations or for taking in wide landscapes.”

The lens is designed with two super-low dispersion glass elements and one aspheric glass element that the company says allows for excellent contrast and sharpness while controlling chromatic aberration.

Tokina chose a clutch mechanism for alternating between manual focus and autofocus: you snap the ring forward for autofocus and backwards towards the lens mount to enter manual focus.

The 17-35mm f/4 claims to have “precise autofocus” thanks to a combination of the Tokia GMR sensor and SD-M (Silent Drive-Module). Tokina also says that there is “moisture protection” on the lens, but did not go into detail on any specific rating.

The new lens is likely the replacement for the Tokina 17-35mm f/4 AT-X Pro lens that is currently on closeout for both Nikon and Canon mounts. This latest version will retail for $600 and will be available on December 11.
