Tokina adds Canon RF, Nikon Z mount options for its $250 400mm F8 Reflex lens

In addition to releasing its two new E mount zoom lens, the optics manufacturer has also announced its SZX Super Tele 400mm F8 Reflex MF lens is now compatible with Canon RF and Nikon Z mount camera systems.

The Tokina SZX Super Tele 400mm F8 Reflex MF lens was first announced back in July 2020. Rather than making different models for each camera mount, Tokina opted instead to use a T-mount standard (42mm screw diameter with .75mm thread pitch), which then works with adapters so the lens can be used on various camera mounts. At launch, the Tokina offered adapters for Canon EF, Fuji X, Micro Four Thirds, Nikon F and Sony E mount camera systems. Now, Canon and Nikon mirrorless users can get in on the action thanks to the new T-mount adapters from Tokina.

To quote our original coverage of the lens:

‘The 400mm F8 lens manages to pack an impressive focal length into a relatively compact frame thanks to its catadioptric design. Usually reserved for telescopes, this design choice makes the smaller design possible, but at the cost of having the signature ‘donut’ bokeh, the lack of autofocus and having a fixed aperture […] The lens is constructed of six elements in five groups, offers a 1:2.5 magnification ratio and measures in at just 355g (11.82oz). It’s 74mm (2.91”) diameter and 77mm (3.03”) in length.’

The Tokina SZX Super Tele 400mm F8 Reflex MF lens is available to purchase as a kit with Canon RF and Nikon Z mount adapters for $250 starting today. Tokina says it will also sell the individual Canon RF and Nikon Z mount adapters for a yet-to-be-determined price starting May 7.
