The Chevy Equinox EV was a hit in 2025 — now comes the big question

The electric Chevy Equinox was the best-selling EV in the US in 2025, behind the Tesla Model Y and Model 3. With more affordable models, including the new Chevy Bolt EV, now on sale, will its run fizzle out?

The Chevy Equinox EV was a hit in 2025

We had a good feeling that the Chevy Equinox EV ranked third based on sales data released by each automaker last week.

New Kelley Blue Book sales data released on Tuesday confirms that the electric Equinox was, in fact, the third top-selling electric vehicle in 2025.

GM sold 57,945 Chevy Equinox EVs last year, double the roughly 28,900 it sold in 2024. The Tesla Model Y remained the top seller by a wide margin, with 357,528 units sold in 2025, followed by the Model 3 in second place, with sales just over 189,900.

Ford’s Mustang Mach-E ranked fourth (51,620), while the Hyundai IONIQ 5 (47,039), Honda Prologue (39,194), Ford F-150 Lightning (27,307), Rivian R1S (24,852), Chevy Blazer EV (22,637), and Volkswagen ID.4 (22,373) rounded out the top 10.

More affordable EVs coming in 2026

As expected, overall electric vehicle sales in the US fell 36% in Q4 (234,000 units sold) from the previous year, following a record-breaking third quarter with the $7,500 federal tax credit expiring at the end of September.

According to KBB estimates, over 1.27 million EVs were sold in the US in 2025, just shy of the record 1.30 million sold in 2024.

GM touted the Chevy Equinox EV as “America’s most affordable 315+ mile range EV” all year, but with even cheaper models now on sale, including new 2027 Bolt and 2026 Nissan LEAF, both of which start under $30,000, the rankings are due for a shakeup by the end of the year.

Although 2026 will bring challenges, Stephanie Valdez Streaty, director of Industry Insights at Cox Automotive, said “momentum remains grounded in market maturation: expanding model availability across price points, improving charging reliability, and continued advances in battery performance and cost.”
