The Chevy Equinox EV is the most popular EV behind Tesla, and it’s not even close

Chevy’s most affordable electric SUV is lapping the competition. The Chevy Equinox EV is now the most popular electric vehicle in the US, trailing only the Tesla Model Y and Model 3.

After another EV sales record in Q3, GM said the Chevy Equinox EV became the best-selling non-Tesla EV in the US.

The electric SUV helped push Chevy past Ford to become the fastest-growing domestic EV brand earlier this year and now ranks second only to Tesla.

According to new data from Kelley Blue Book, the Chevy Equinox EV is quickly outpacing the competition. That is outside of the Tesla Model Y and Model 3, of course.

Through September, the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 remained the top-selling EVs by a wide margin, but the electric Equinox is starting to pull away from the rest of the pack. With over 25,000 models sold in Q3, Chevy Equinox EV sales nearly reached 53,000 through the first nine months of 2025.

As Kelley Blue Book points out, “The top 3 are outliers, as the vast majority of EVs sell at a rate of far less than 2,000 a month, or 6,000 units a quarter.”

Ford sold just under 41,962 Mustang Mach-Es through September, over 10,000 fewer than the Chevy Equinox EV. The Hyundai IONIQ 5 is closing in on the Mach-E with 41,091 units sold through September, while the Honda Prologue ranked sixth with 36,553 units sold.

Outside of those models, the Ford F-150 Lightning (23,034), Volkswagen ID.4 (22,125), and the Chevy Blazer EV (20,825) are the only models with over 20,000 in sales through the third quarter.

GM and Ford both scrapped plans for a program to extend the $7,500 federal EV tax credit through leasing, but will offer incentives of their own.

Earlier this week, we learned the 2026 Chevy Equinox EV will be priced slightly higher than the 2025 model year, starting at $36,495.

With the new Chevy Bolt arriving in early 2026 at under $30,000, will the electric Equinox EV see as much demand? For now, it remains the most affordable GM electric vehicle.
