Tesla (TSLA) new 4680 battery cell to be produced by Panasonic, report says

Tesla (TSLA) has recently introduced plans to produce its own battery cells called ‘4680’, but now we learn that Panasonic will also be producing the new cell for them, according to a new report.

While Tesla has been working on its own battery cell chemstry for years, it has always worked with experienced battery cell manufacturers to produce them while it focused on battery module and pack manufacturing.

Panasonic has been Tesla’s main partner when it comes to battery cell supply, but the company has also been using LG Chem and CATL more recently.

At its ‘Battery Day’ event in September, the automaker announced a long-anticipated change in its strategy.

It unveiled a new tabless battery cell in a bigger format with a new chemistry and plans to produce it itself with production machinery designed in-house.

However, CEO Elon Musk also made clear at the event that Tesla would still continue to use battery manufacturers and buy all the battery cell supply they can get to support to ambitious growth plan.

But the CEO didn’t say if the battery manufacturers would produce Tesla’s new battery cell or they will keep buying cells from the current 2170 and 18650 formats, which all their electric vehicles still use.

Now Nikkei Asia, an Asia-based business newspaper, reports that Panasonic is working on building production lines to produce prototypes of Tesla’s 4680 battery cells at its existing facilities:

“Panasonic will set up a prototype production line at existing facilities. The cost of the project is expected to run into the tens of millions of dollars.”

The publication reports that production of the prototype cells would start next year and it could lead to a new supply agreement with Tesla.

Currently, the new cells are only being produced at a pilot plant in Fremont, but Tesla is already working on large scale factories to produce the batteries at Gigafactory Berlin and other locations.

Electrek’s Take

This is an interesting development.

At Battery Day, Elon made it clear that Tesla would stil buy battery cells from other suppliers even after they establish their own battery production.

However, he didn’t made it clear that those other suppliers would be making the 4680 cells since the new tabless design and several components in the cell required Tesla to design new manufacturing processes.

Though it does make sense considering all the benefits of the new form factor, but we also know that it will take some time for Tesla to switch all its vehicle programs to the new format.

Interestingly, aside from Panasonic, we also recently reported on LG Chem talking about producing new battery cells that sounded a lot like Tesla’s 4680, but they never actually mentioned the automaker.

If several battery suppliers start producing these cells for Tesla, we could see a real shift in the industry to this new format.
