Tesla launches new Powerwall 3 expansion units that slash installation times

Tesla Powerwall 3 Expansion: Cutting Installation Time in Half

Tesla has launched its new Powerwall 3 expansion units that can slash installation times by roughly half. We reported on Tesla’s plan for this new unit back in April.

As we previously reported, the main difference between Powerwall 3 and its previous version is its power capacity. The energy capacity remains at 13.5 kWh, but the power capacity is now rated at 11.5 kW and Elon Musk claims it has a peak of 30 kW.

This new power capacity enables single-Powerwall installations as the power capacity was often the bottleneck.

But Tesla also took advantage of the high power capacity to come up with a new product: Tesla Powerwall 3 expansion unit or DC expansion unit.

It’s basically a Powerwall 3 without a power inverter. Tesla can stack this unit with a normal Powerwall 3 – adding 13.5 kWh of energy capacity with each expansion.

This unit is $1,000 cheaper than a regular Powerwall 3 – allowing a cheaper total system for people who need more than 13.5 kWh of energy capacity.

Tesla has now officially launched this unit in the US and shows that it can significantly cut installation times:

Not sure this will have much impact when it comes to Canada. I got a quote to install 2 PW3’s in Ontario for $43k Canadian (before tax). Allowing for the fact the transfer switch already looked to be on the wall in Tesla’s video, maybe add another hour. Still seems like a massive markup for the install work involved over the price of the PW’s from Tesla. Anyone get a reasonable quote for PW3 installation in Ontario or Canada?

According to this, Tesla can install a 2-Powerwall system with the expansion unit as quickly as 22 minutes versus 45 minutes for a regular 2-Powerwall installation.

This will result in giant savings over hundreds of thousands of installations annually.

Tesla recently said that it can now produce Powerwalls at a rate of 700,000 units per year.
