Tamron has announced it’s developing a 70–300mm F4.5–6.3 Di III RXD lens for Nikon Z-mount camera systems. This would make it the first third-party zoom lens for Nikon Z-mount cameras with autofocus capabilities.
Based on the external design and the specifications that are mentioned, this ‘new’ lens appears to be a Z-mount version of the company’s 70–300mm F4.5–6.3 Di III RXD lens for Sony E-mount camera systems that was first announced back in September 2020.
The Z-mount version features the same optical design, consisting of 15 elements in 10 groups, including a low-dispersion element for minimizing aberrations and Tamron’s BBAR coating for minimizing reflections. Autofocus is driven via Tamron’s Extra-Silent Stepping Drive (RXD) motor technology, which is also used in the E-mount variety.
The lens is ‘moisture-resistant’ and will work the Tamron’s Lens Utility software, which allows users to update the lens’ firmware and make other tweaks via the onboard USB-C cable.
Tamron says the 70–300mm F4.5–6.3 Di III RXD lens for Nikon Z-mount camera systems ‘is expected to ship this fall,’ but no specific release date is provided. For pricing context, the E-mount version had an MSRP of $549 at launch.
