Tamron has announced the development of the 2nd-generation version of its well-regarded 28-75mm F2.8 lens for full-frame Sony mirrorless bodies: the 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2.
The lens will have a new optical construction and will use the company’s VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear focus motor technology, which we’ve found enables very swift focus speeds in Tamron’s recent lens offerings. The minimum focus distance has dropped slightly to 18cm (7.1″), with the max magnification rising to 0.37x. The lens will also have refined ergonomics with focus and zoom rings that are well demarcated from the lens barrel thanks to their slightly greater diameter. Importantly, the new lens will remain just as compact as its predecessor.
By using the Tamron Lens Utility and optional connector cable, users will be able to change the function of the Focus Set button and focus ring. The Focus Set button can be programmed to switch between two pre-set focus positions or jump to one predefined position, or to any custom function assignable to the camera’s custom buttons. The focus ring can be switched to operate as an aperture ring, and in manual focus mode its rotation direction and mode of operation (linear vs. non-linear) can be customized.
Pricing and availability were not disclosed.
