Tamron has announced it’s developing a new 20–40mm F2.8 Di III VXD zoom lens for full-frame Sony E-mount camera systems. The forthcoming lens is expected to launch in Fall 2022.
Tamron doesn’t provide a full list of specifications for the lens, but does note a few key details. Most notably, the lens will use Tamron’s Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive (VXD) linear motors for autofocus and will have a minimum focusing distance of 17cm (6.7″) for a 1:3.8 magnification ratio (at 20mm). Tamron says the lens will be ‘compatible with many camera-specific features and functions, including Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF.’
The lens will have a zoom ring rotation arc of 65º for quick zooming in and out and through Tamron’s Lens Utility app, you’ll be able to adjust the focus ring function setting and update the firmware of the lens. Tamron says the lens will use a 67mm front filter thread and will have a ‘new design with improved texture and scratch resistance.’ This design will include a ‘moisture-resistant construction’ as well as a fluorine coating on the front most lens element to repel debris, dust and water. The lens will measure 8.64cm (3.4″) long and weigh 365g (12.9oz).
No pricing information has been provided at this time, but we should see the lens launched sometime in ‘Fall 2022,’ according to Tamron.
