Tamron announces development of its 35-150mm F2-2.8 zoom for Nikon Z-mount

Tamron has announced the development of the 35-150mm F2-2.8 Di III VXD, a full-frame zoom lens for Nikon Z-mount cameras. This isn’t, strictly speaking, a new lens – Tamron released the same lens for Sony E-mount in 2021 – but it will now be available to Z-mount shooters as well.

The company says this is the first zoom lens for Nikon’s Z-mount system to have a maximum aperture of F2. It uses Tamron’s VXD linear motor for quick autofocus, and Tamron claims the lens is moisture-resistant and includes a fluorine coated front element.

Although Tamron didn’t include full technical specs, the E-mount version provides a minimum focusing distances from 33cm (13″) at the wide end to 85cm (33.5″) at full tele, giving a maximum magnification ratio that ranges from 1:5.7 to 1:5.9.

Tamron didn’t announce pricing, but the E-mount version had a price tag of $1899 at launch. The lens is expected to be available in ‘Fall 2023’.

Tamron Announces the Development of 35-150mm F/2-2.8 Di III VXD (Model A058) for “Nikon Z Mount System”

World’s first[1] mirrorless zoom lens with maximum wide-open aperture of F2 for Nikon Z mount cameras

July 25, 2023, Commack, NY – Tamron announces the development of the 35-150mm F/2-2.8 Di III VXD (Model A058), a fast-aperture telephoto zoom lens for Nikon Z mount cameras. The lens is expected to be delivered in the Fall 2023.

The 35-150mm F2-2.8 covers wide-angle through telephoto and is ideal for both travel and portrait photography. It is the first zoom lens for Nikon Z mount cameras to have a maximum wide-open aperture of F2. By incorporating the VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor focus mechanism, the lens features a very high-speed and high-precision autofocus for a fast-aperture lens. It also incorporates a new design in the pursuit of enhanced operability and ergonomic convenience.

With its versatile focal range and high-level performance under a wide variety of shooting conditions, this fast lens is ideal for travel aimed at creating photographic works. Users can enjoy shooting magnificent views and large buildings at 35mm and dynamic close-up shots at 150mm.

Incorporating the most frequently used focal lengths from wide-angle and standard to medium telephoto and telephoto all within this single lens allows for seamless shooting without the need to swap lenses, which is beneficial especially when shooting portraits where a sense of rhythm is particularly important. This helps the user capture outstanding shots without missing the fleeting expressions of the model.
