A recent study by Cyber Metals, a JM Bullion company, analyzed the sentiment, vocabulary, and profanity within popular investment subreddits on Reddit, uncovering distinct trends in how different communities discuss stocks, crypto assets, and precious metals. The findings highlight the unique culture of each subreddit, reflecting the diverse moods and attitudes of online investors.

The Cyber Metals’ study revealed that “crypto” and “bitcoin” are the most frequently mentioned words across investing subreddits, underscoring the sustained interest in these digital assets. Positive sentiment was most prevalent in subreddits like r/stocks, r/investing, and r/bullion, with over 53% of posts in these communities expressing optimism.

In contrast, r/wallstreetbets, known for its high-energy discussions, had the lowest percentage of positive sentiment, with only 30.4% of posts reflecting a favorable outlook. This disparity illustrates the varying perspectives among investors, influenced by recent market fluctuations and economic uncertainty. Cyber Metals also analyzed the lexical diversity of the subreddits to gauge the intelligence of the discussions.

Subreddits such as r/ether, r/wallstreetbets, and r/gold stood out for their varied vocabulary, with r/ether leading at 25.4%. These metrics suggest that these communities engage in more complex conversations, particularly around ethereum and precious metals. Despite the intense atmosphere in r/wallstreetbets, it also showed a relatively high level of lexical diversity, indicating intricate discussions amid the community’s high-energy exchanges.

Profanity was another area of focus, with r/wallstreetbets leading in the use of colorful language, averaging 107.1 profane words per 1,000 posts. This was closely followed by r/CryptoCurrency. The frequent use of profanity in these subreddits may reflect the stress and volatility often associated with day trading and crypto investing. The study underscores the vibrant and sometimes intense nature of these online communities, which serve as both a sounding board and support network for investors navigating turbulent markets.
