Sony Xperia 5 IV rumor claims the phone will use a TSMC-sourced Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset

Even though it hit store shelves late (really late in some places), the Xperia 5 III is nearly a year old now – it was announced in April of 2021. This means a replacement should be around the corner and one Weibo user claims to have inside info on what the new phone will be like.

The Sony Xperia 5 IV will allegedly stick to the 6.1” screen diagonal, so the phone should be roughly the same size as the current model. However, it will be a tad heavier at 180g (up from 168g) and it will use Gorilla Glass Victus (non-plus) on both sides.

The main camera will use the IMX557, a 12 MP sensor previously featured on the Xperia 1 II. Being 1/1.7” in size means that it has 1.8 µm pixels, larger than other phones on the market have. Well, except for the Xperia 1 and 5 models, which use this (or similar) sensors.

The telephoto lens will get the IMX663, a 12 MP sensor (1/2.93”, 1.22 µm), and a dual focal length lens that can switch between 3x and 4.4x magnification. The ultra wide cam will use another 12 MP sensor, the ever popular IMX363 (1/2.55”, 1.4 µm). Overall, it sounds like the camera on the Mark IV will be very similar if not identical to the current one, assuming this information is correct.

The Xperia 5 IV will, of course, get upgraded to the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset. Interestingly, the leakster that published this info claims that the chip will be sourced from TSMC instead of Samsung (the chip, SM8475, may be marketed as the 8 Gen 1+). This could mean another late launch since Qualcomm is yet to officially confirm that the TSMC version of the 8 Gen 1 exists.

The phone will allegedly retain its 3.5 mm headphone jack, which has become something of a trademark for the Xperia series. Also, the battery capacity will be increased slightly (the Mark III has 4,500 mAh).

The Sony Xperia 5 IV will launch in the CNY 5,000 price range, says the leakster. The Mark III is CNY 5,600 right now, suggesting that the new model will cost the same as its predecessor.
