Sony to Release Ultra-Fast, Ultra-Wide 16mm f/1.8 GM Lens in 2021: Report

Astrophotographers take note: according to a new report, Sony is working on “the world’s fastest 16mm full-frame lens.” The rumored 16mm f/1.8 GM will be the fastest and widest prime lens in the Sony G Master arsenal, and one of the fastest ultra-wide primes on the market.

The news comes from Sony Alpha Rumors, who credits “a trusted source” with the information and seems very confident that this lens is definitely coming, and coming fairly soon at that.

The Sony 16mm f/1.8 G Master will supposedly arrive in “early 2021,” giving astrophotographers and wide-angle fiends something to drool over by chopping a full 10mm off of the fastest ultra-wide prime in the current G Master lineup: the FE 24mm f/1.4 GM. Speaking of which, SAR claims that this 16mm lens will be “about the same size and build quality” as the 24mm, so expect a large, well-built lens with lots of glass and a hefty price tag.

We mention astrophotographers since fast-and-wide is sort of their domain, but there are lots of other photo and video shooters who would love to add a lens like this or the Sigma 14mm f/1.8 DG HSM to their kit. Are you one of them? Let us know your thoughts on this rumored lens in the comments.
