Samsung may be planning to release a wider Galaxy Fold this year after a limited release of its Galaxy TriFold. The wider Galaxy Fold could deliver the entertainment benefits of the TriFold but at a cheaper cost. Furthermore, the brand is still uncertain whether it should develop the successors of the TriFold and its last year’s Galaxy S25 Edge.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Samsung’s Mobile Experience COO Won-Joon Choi addressed the limitations of launching a phone like the TriFold and confirmed that its future remains uncertain at the moment. “Initially, it was more like creating a new category and putting all of our know-how into this,” Choi said. “Now we wonder, should we develop a new one? We have not made a decision yet.”
As for the wider Galaxy Fold, the device could possess similar characteristics to the TriFold in terms of aspect ratio, allowing for similar entertainment benefits. “All these productivity-related experiences, some people care about. And others are like ‘I want to watch Netflix or YouTube on a bigger screen,'” Choi said. “Obviously if you have a TriFold kind of aspect ratio, it’s optimized for that kind of experience and application.”
He added that Samsung is “considering all different options” for the single-folding category and wants to give users “as many options as possible – the best solution possible.” We have already seen multiple traces of such a device’s existence through strings found in leaked One UI 9 builds.
Speaking of the S25 EDGE which was supposed to be an iPhone Air killer and launched months prior to it, seems to have been a letdown for the company. Choi confirmed the device’s sales figures have been “relatively lower than other lineups,” something that has been known unofficially for a while now. “People have different taste and requirements and different criteria in selecting their device,” he said. “We haven’t made a decision when to have a next one, but it’s still being considered,” he added, suggesting we may never get to see the Galaxy S26 Edge.
Choi also revealed a few other interesting details, such as how the Privacy Display feature of the Galaxy S26 Ultra was supposed to debut with the S25 Ultra. However, a few kinks had to be ironed out before the technology was ready so the company took another year to resolve those issues. He also confirmed how Samsung is working on a new generation S-Pen for supported devices. “We’re working on a more advanced technology within S-Pen to come up with a new structure of display, so the penalty of having S-Pen is diminished,” he said, without providing further details. “S-Pen will continue to be one of the core technologies.”
