Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra to have an updated 108MP camera, laser autofocus

Samsung is rumored to launch the Galaxy S21 Ultra on January 14 and according to one leakster, the phone’s camera will be updated over the one of its predecessor. Just like the Galaxy S20 Ultra, we’ll have a 108MP sensor, but this time Samsung is skipping on the ToF camera.

Galaxy S21 Ultra is a small improved version of S20 Ultra. Using HM3 sensor, single pixel is still 0.8um, 108MP, laser focus, no ToF.

The leakster, known on Twitter and Weibo as Ice Universe, said the while the sensor will keep the same amount of pixels, it will be ISOCELL HM3 – an upgrade over the ISOCELL Bright HM1 that comes in the S20 Ultra. It is said to bring 12% better light sensitivity which would bring out a bit more details and will take night photos a tad faster.

The disappearance of the ToF camera will be compensated with Laser AF. While this sounds like a downgrade, it is actually the same solution in the Galaxy Note20 Ultra – the other Samsung flagship currently available.

Back when we reviewed the Galaxy S20 Ultra, we established the ToF doesn’t bring a lot to the table, so we probably won’t miss it much.
