Samsung has announced that the Z Fold 4 is getting support for the Expert RAW app, which lets users manually change camera settings and shoot in RAW.

The Expert RAW app is an incredibly powerful tool for Android photographers that gives users the control they can normally only get from a manual camera, like setting the ISO or adjusting shutter speeds in addition to being able to shoot in RAW. The Samsung-made app is free as well.

The latest update for the app adds Z Fold 4 support and also includes the ability to save custom presets. The company also claims it has made improvements for images taken in low light. The ability to edit RAW photos also steps up the options for phone photography considerably, both for those already channeling experience from full-size cameras and beginning photographers looking to learn the ropes with the equipment they already have.

Expert RAW was introduced earlier this year for some of Samsung’s top-of-the-line phones, including the latest Galaxy lines from the S21 and up.

The Z Fold 4 already packs decent camera artillery with three rear lenses, including a 12-megapixel ultra-wide, 50-megapixel wide-angle, and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. For reference, this is the same setup that the Galaxy S22 sports. That’s not to mention the massive screen that makes view finding and post-processing far easier.

The Galaxy S22 is Getting Updates, Too

Lest Samsung’s true flagship device be forgotten, the Galaxy S22 is getting camera updates of its own. This includes added support for the telephoto camera in rear hyperlapse mode, improved performance for QR code reading, optimization for memory and the AI engine, optimized picture quality for photos and video, sharpness and contrast intensity adjustments, and color and dark brightness of the night mode, according to a post from a moderator working on the camera in Samsung’s Korean forum.

The post touts additional features coming soon like an astronomical hyperlapse feature that is reportedly under development and improvements to ultra-low light mode, though no timeline was given for these possible future updates.

There’s no similar post on U.S.-based Samsung forums. However, the same user noted support for the Z Fold and preset saving coming to Expert RAW back in July, adding credibility to the source.

The added Expert RAW support remains a welcome update for phone photographers, as well as continued improvements to the base camera app for the S22.
