Today at the Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit, the company announced that its latest two chipsets will support a virtual drivers license or identification document via Androids Identity Credential API.
Were very excited to announce that Snapdragon will be the first mobile SoC to support Android Identity Credential APIs, which means that mobile drivers license and electronic ID will be possible with Android R.
This API was first spotted earlier this year via in a post detailing Androids intentions to create a secure framework for storing identification documents. Check out that XDA post for a deep dive on how the API might work, even when the battery is too low to boot Android.
Virtualization of ID cards is something that weve been anticipating in the last few years and it seems that with Android, a standardized framework could make it possible.
