Oppo details the AI Highlight Video system that powers Reno5 Pro 5G’s camera

Oppo has been advancing mobile cameras for years now, delivering memorable phones like the Oppo Find 7 and more recent examples like the Reno 10x zoom and Find X2 Pro. Now the company is preparing to launch the Oppo Reno5 Pro 5G in India on January 18. But first the company wanted to talk about the secret sauce behind the phone’s camera.

The camera is backed by the Full Dimension Fusion Portrait Video system, part of which is the AI Highlight Video. It uses AI to examine the lighting conditions of the scene and apply the appropriate algorithm – Ultra Night Video or Live HDR.

The system uses adaptive algorithms to enhance the brightness and dynamic range of the image while reducing noise. This is used both for nighttime shots and challenging daytime conditions as well.

Adaptive Noise Reduction combines the usual multi-frame fusion with temporal noise reduction – basically, using previous frames (adjusted to compensate for camera movement). This also allows the system to reduce ghosting due to fast movement.

All told, processing takes 20 milliseconds. Compared to the previous image processing system, AI Highlight Video uses 40% less power but improves the brightness and clarity of the image.

The Oppo Reno5 Pro 5G will be the first phone in India to be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ chipset. It’s exactly this chipset that will run the processing algorithms of AI Highlight Video.

The phone (which already launched in China and is heading for the global markets too) also features a 64 MP main plus an 8 MP ultra wide cameras on the back along with a 32 MP camera on the front. It has a 6.55” OLED display with 90 Hz refresh rate and a 4,350 mAh battery with 65W fast charging.

On a related note, Oppo’s Soloop app, which uses AI to automate the difficult part of video editing, now boasts over 40 million users, who have shared over 60 million videos over the year and a half since its debut.
