Bitcoin Holdings of Tesla and Spacex

Crypto analytics firm Arkham announced Thursday that it has identified the bitcoin holdings of Elon Musk’s companies, Tesla and Spacex. According to the firm’s analysis, Tesla owns 11,509 BTC and Spacex owns 8,285 BTC. Arkham shared on social media platform X:

Arkham has identified the BTC holdings of Tesla and Spacex. We are the first to publicly identify these holdings on chain. We believe Tesla currently holds 11.51K BTC ($780M) across 68 addresses, and Spacex holds 8.29K BTC ($560M) across 28 addresses.

“The on-chain fund flows we’ve identified match financial statements from Tesla and Spacex,” the company further explained, adding that Tesla purchased $1.5 billion of bitcoin in January 2021 and sold its BTC on two occasions.

The first BTC sale by Tesla occurred in Q1, 2021, when the company sold $272 million worth. The electric car company then sold another $936 million in Q2 2022. Additionally, Arkham stated that transactional data confirmed that Tesla accepted BTC for vehicle purchases between March 24 and May 12, 2021. Tesla’s bitcoin holdings can be seen here.

Tesla maintained its digital asset holdings at $184 million in Q4 2023, unchanged since the fourth quarter of 2022. The company primarily holds bitcoin, with a negligible amount of meme cryptocurrency dogecoin (DOGE) accepted for select merchandise.

Arkham also claimed that it has identified Spacex’s bitcoin holdings, which can be seen here. In January, Elon Musk revealed that Spacex owns “a bunch of bitcoin.”

While Musk previously disclosed that he personally owns bitcoin, ether, and dogecoin, the billionaire said in December last year that he doesn’t spend a lot of time thinking about cryptocurrency. Moreover, he said in November that none of his companies will ever create a crypto token.
