Nikon to Release Two New DSLRs, Several F-Mount Lenses in 2021: Report

Nikon Rumors is reporting that according to a recent internal Nikon presentation, the company plans to release two new DSLRs in 2021 along with “several” F-mount lenses, as the company won’t give up on the mirror quite yet.

The report “confirms” that the lenses are coming next year, and also states – albeit absent of the word “confirmed” – that the two DSLR bodies will also arrive. Apparently, Nikon has stated that it has not stopped the development of DSLRs because the company is not quite ready to give up on the F-mount, but the majority of research and development funds are still focused on mirrorless.

Nikon is probably not willing to stop supporting F-mount as the company reportedly also shows that DSLR bodies are still outselling mirrorless cameras. Given the financial state of the company, this should not come as a surprise.

In addition to the news on DSLRs, the company plans to release eight Z-mount lenses by the end of next year, bringing the total number of native lenses for the system up to 24. Included will be two new macro lenses at the 60mm and 105mm focal lengths, and the upcoming 100-400mm lens is said to be “very sharp” and is anticipated to sell in high numbers.

The Nikon Z7 II should start shipping in mid-December, with the second shipment due by the middle of January. You can pre-order yours here. The company will continue to support all its current mirrorless cameras with firmware updates, and the plan is to significantly improve the function of the bodies with those updates, not just address small fixes.

That last note on significant firmware changes is in line with what Nikon has already done with the original Z6 and Z7 bodies, which saw incredible firmware support after launch. The cameras that were purchased on day one are now significantly improved thanks to those updates.
