New Android 16 Update Brings Themed Icons, Call Reason, and More to Pixel Phones

Google has released a new Android 16 update for Pixel phones which brings a bunch of new features and also marks a major shift in how major Android updates are released, “moving from a single, yearly operating system update to more frequent releases.” “This means you get the latest features as soon as they’re ready,” said Google.

Android 16 Update December 2025: Everything That’s New

The new Android 16 update brings a series of smart, personal, and safety-driven improvements designed to help users stay focused, express themselves, and manage their digital life more effortlessly. To reduce notification overload, the update introduces AI-powered notification summaries that condense long messages and busy group chats into quick, digestible snippets. Along with this, the new notification organizer automatically collects and silences low-priority alerts like promos, news updates, and social pings.

Personalisation also gets a big upgrade in the new Android 16 update. Users can now choose custom icon shapes to match their style, while themed icons apply a consistent look across apps for a cleaner, more cohesive home screen. The expanded dark theme can automatically darken most light-themed apps, even if they don’t offer a native dark mode, helping reduce eye strain and extend battery life.

For families, Android is making parental controls more accessible and intuitive. The new Android 16 update adds built-in Parental Controls directly into the system settings, protected by a simple PIN. Parents can set daily screen time limits, schedule downtime at night, manage which apps can be used and for how long, and even grant extra time when needed. The menu also connects seamlessly to Google Family Link, where parents can use additional tools such as School Time, App purchase approvals, and location alerts from their own device.

Communication and sharing also see meaningful upgrades with the new Android 16 update. Expressive Captions now show the emotional tone behind speech in real time – including intensity, applause, cheering, or whether someone sounds joyful or sad. This helps users fully understand context even when watching videos with the sound off, whether it’s a story, livestream, or message from a friend.

Emoji Kitchen expands with new sticker combos, letting users express themselves more playfully and creatively. Whether sending bigger hugs or festive-season messages, the new combinations in Gboard add more personality to conversations.

The new Android 16 update also introduces Call Reason, a feature (currently in beta) that lets users mark an outgoing call as urgent. When the recipient sees “urgent” on their incoming call screen, they immediately know it’s time-sensitive. If the call is missed, the urgent tag remains in their history so they can respond quickly. For increased safety in messaging, users will now get instant alerts when they’re added to a group chat by an unknown number. They can leave, block, or report the group in a single tap.

To help users avoid scams, Circle to Search can now be used to check suspicious texts or chats in the moment. With one gesture, users can get an AI Overview that pulls trustworthy information from across the web to assess whether a message might be fraudulent and see recommended next steps.

Rounding out the experience, the new Android 16 update adds tab pinning in Chrome. Important pages – from daily reading to trip planning – can be pinned to stay at the front of the browser, making it easy to jump right back in without losing track.

All the new features are rolling out to eligible Pixel devices starting today.
